This article reports on the identification of a group 2 coronavirus (BatCoV DR/2007) in a Desmodus rotundus vampire bat in Brazil. Phylogenetic analysis of ORF1b revealed that BatCoV DR/2007 originates from a unique lineage in the archetypical group 2 coronaviruses, as described for bat species elsewhere with putative importance in Public Health. |

The genomic DNA of thirty strains of Aujeszky's disease virus (ADV) isolated in the South and Southeast regions of Brazil from 1982 to 1996 were characterized by restriction endonuclease analysis with BamHI. Twenty seven strains were isolated from pigs, 1 from cattle, 1 from cat and 1 from dog. Using a systematization previously described, the 30 ADV strains could be classified as genomic types I (n = 2) and II (n = 28). Genomic type III was not observed. In this first study of genomic type characterization of brazilian ADV strains, we could demonstrate the occurence in Brazil of the genomic types I and II, with a large predominance of genomic type II. |

Inactivation of leptospires in pools of semen from three Holstein Friesian bulls, collected in an artificial vagina, was investigated. Spermatic concentration was adjusted in egg yolk citrate extender, submitted to the following treatments: A (control; without antibiotics); B (penicillin, 1,000 UI/mL - streptomycin, 1,000 µg/mL); C (amoxicillin, 1,000 µg/mL); D (ceptiofur sodium, 1,000 µg/mL); E (amoxicillin 1,000 µg/mL - ceptiofur sodium 1,000 µg/mL). Leptospires (2.0 x 10(6) leptospires/mL) were added into the diluted semen. Recovery of leptospires was obtained in modified EMJH semi-solid medium with and without antibiotics. The antibiotics in the concentrations used did not affect means of percentage of progressive motility and individual progressive... |

Infectious abortion is a significant cause of reproductive failure and economic losses in cattle. The goal of this study was to detect nucleic acids of several infectious agents known to cause abortion including Arcanobacterium pyogenes, Bovine Herpesvirus 1, Brucella abortus, Campylobacter fetus subsp. venerealis, Chlamydophila abortus, Leptospira sp., Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella sp., Mycoplasma bovis, Mycoplasma bovigenitalium, Neospora caninum, and Tritrichomonas foetus. Tissue homogenates from 42 fetuses and paraffin-embedded tissues from 28 fetuses and 14 placentas/endometrium were included in this study. Brucella abortus was detected in 14.2% (12/84) of the samples. Salmonella sp. DNA was amplified from 2 fetuses, and there was one positive... |

Toxoplasmosis is a zoonosis that has been the subject of study in Brazil and worldwide. The dogs are sentinels for the infection and can carry Toxoplasma gondii in the environment. Seroepidemiological surveys of these animals are an important tool in the surveillance and control of the disease and inform decision-making in health programs. In this study the performance of the Modified Agglutination Test (MAT) in the serodiagnosis of canine toxoplasmosis is evaluated and compared to the indirect immunofluorescent-antibody test (IFAT). A sample of 157 dog sera from the county of Monte Negro, Rondônia, with 76.40% positive reactions for Toxoplasma gondii (IFAT =16) was analyzed using the MAT (=25), presenting sensitivity of 85.00% (Confidence Interval 95.00%:... |

Abstract Equine influenza is one of the major respiratory infectious diseases in horses. An equine influenza virus outbreak was identified in vaccinated and unvaccinated horses in a veterinary school hospital in São Paulo, SP, Brazil, in September 2015. The twelve equine influenza viruses isolated belonged to Florida Clade 1. The hemagglutinin and neuraminidase amino acid sequences were compared with the recent isolates from North and South America and the World Organisation for Animal Health recommended Florida Clade 1 vaccine strain. The hemagglutinin amino acid sequences had nine substitutions, compared with the vaccine strain. Two of them were in antigenic site A (A138S and G142R), one in antigenic site E (R62K) and another not in antigenic site... |

The objective of the present trial was to characterize genetically strains of Campylobacter jejuni subsp. jejuni isolated from humans and several animal sources (bovines, swine, dogs, primates, wild boars and poultry). A total of 828 different animal samples (feces, carcass, aborted fetus and hysterectomized uterus) were analysed by means of routine bacteriological methods, and 36 C. jejuni strains were isolated. Thirty strains of human fecal origin were obtained in clinical analysis laboratories in the city of São Paulo. The 66 C. jejuni strains isolated were submitted to genetic characterization. Primers based on fla A gene were used in a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and amplified a fragment of the 702 bp. PCR products were evaluated by means of... |

Hamsters orally inoculated with ERA and PV strains of rabies virus were sacrificed at 24, 48, 72 hours, 21 and 30 days after inoculation. Brain fragments were examined by Fluorescent Antibody test (FAT) and heminested PCR (hn-PCR). Fragments from stomach, blood, heart, and lung were examined only by hn-PCR. Sera of other hamsters, similarly inoculated, obtained at 30th day after inoculation were submitted to mouse neutralization test. The hamsters were challenged intracerebrally with CVS strain with 10(2.7)mouse LD50/0.03mL, 45 days after inoculation. Brains examined by FAT were negative. The hn-PCR detected the presence of rabies virus RNA in the lung of one animal inoculated with ERA, and in the brain, stomach, blood, and lung of PV-infected animals. The... |
